Short History of the Tennessee Volunteers
The Tennessee Volunteers first fielded a team in 1891. The program claims six national championships—1938, 1940, 1951, 1967, and 1998—with 1938 and 1998 as consensus titles under head coaches Robert Neyland and Phillip Fulmer respectively. Tennessee has also won 16 SEC championships and captured five SEC Eastern Division titles in 1997, 1998, 2001, 2003, and 2007. Recent successes include the 2023 Citrus Bowl victory over Iowa to wrap a 9–4 season.
