Short History of the North Carolina Tar Heels
The Tar Heels began playing football in 1888 and have won 10 conference titles across the Southern and Atlantic Coast conferences. They've appeared in 37 bowl games and produced NFL legends like Julius Peppers and Charlie Justice. In 1948, the team went 9–0–1, ranked No. 3, and sported one of the nation’s first forward-passes in 1895. In December 2024, UNC made a bold move hiring six-time Super Bowl-winning coach Bill Belichick on a five-year $10 million/year contract.
